The Modern Apprenticeship (MA) programme combines paid employment with work-based training and leads to industry recognised vocational qualifications. Aimed principally at the 16-24 age group, it attracts both new recruits and existing employees. The programme offers young people the chance to work and study to gain further qualifications, without having to go to college on a full time basis.
A wide range of industry sectors offer Modern Apprenticeships. They follow a framework which has been developed by the appropriate Sector Skills Council (SSC) in consultation with industry to ensure the qualifications meet their requirements.
The apprenticeship generally takes between one and four years to complete and leads towards an SVQ Level 2 (SCQF 5) or above.
