Free Hair Cuts going down a storm

On 30th January, the Hair and Beauty Department at Dundee and Angus College opened up their pop-up Barber Shop at their Gardyne campus. All haircuts given at the Gardyne campus are free of charge and are part of the college’s Thrive campaign and are available to everyone not just those at the college.

The pop-up service has been running from 2 pm – 7 pm on Mondays and Wednesdays and in five weeks has had 182 clients. This has been made up of students, staff, and the general public. There has been so much demand for this that the service is now being offered all day on a Monday and there are hopes to introduce another day in April.

As well as providing free haircuts to make life a little easier during challenging times the service is not only benefiting the clients but is benefiting the Barbering students. It is providing them with the much-needed experience they need to learn and grow in the trade.

Debbie Donaldson Curriculum and Quality Leader for Hair, Beauty, and Complementary Therapies at Dundee and Angus College said, “From the two sessions a week offered I am amazed at how this has taken off. The students are loving this experience too, having numerous haircuts each to complete within one session and they are now ‘feeling like real Barbers’. The campus is so busy, there is a real buzz in the atrium area which provides a feel-good factor for all participating. Our students were a bit nervous at first with not having had much experience but I am so proud of their professionalism, client care, and high standards while being fully supervised throughout. It is definitely building their confidence and skills to take into this exciting and growing industry.”

To get your free haircut and help students gain experience visit the Barbershop at Gardyne anytime from 9 am to 7 pm on a Monday and from 2 pm to 7 pm.
