Childcare Academy

Course Content

This intensive course includes an extensive placement in a childcare setting or an enhanced setting to support you to complete the full SVQ Level 2 in Social Services Children and Young People. You will be expected to attend 4 days per week (2 days in college and 2 days on placement).

You will study a range of childcare related subjects, including Additional Support for Learning, Supporting Behaviour, Child Development, Promoting the Wellbeing and Safety of Children, Play and Core Skill Communication.

This course can lead to progression to employment as an early years support assistant or a learning care assistant.

Entry Requirements

Two National 5s at grade C or above (or equivalent). Applicants who have successfully completed Child, Health and Social Care (Level 5) or Certificate in Early Education and Childcare (Level 5) will also be considered. Mature applicants will be assessed on an individual basis.

Selection is based on written information within the application, qualifications and/or experience, one satisfactory reference and completion of a short written task.

All applicants will require an acceptable PVG record.

Method of Assessment

Reflective accounts, class activities, written reports, essays, assessments and presentations.

Future Prospects

This course can lead to progression to employment as an early years support assistant or a learning care assistant.

In addition, D&A College has a partnership agreement with Dundee City Council for a guaranteed interview for the position of Learning and Care Assistant (LCA) upon successful completion of all aspects of the course and a positive reference from your course tutor.

Progression to the HNC Childhood Practice full-time programme may also be an option.
