NC Animal Care (SCQF Level 5)
Course Content
This course establishes the principles of a wide range of animal care subjects, including healthcare and husbandry. The course develops knowledge in specialist areas such as anatomy, small animal feeding, breeding, parasitology and exotic pets, as well as safe working practices.
It is delivered with a balance of theoretical classes and practical skills such as health checks and records, handling, husbandry, feeding and accommodation maintenance.
Entry Requirements
External Applicants: Two National 5’s at Grade C or above plus one National 4 in academic subjects (or equivalent qualifications). Learners will be required to work with a wide variety of small animals (including rodents, reptiles and birds). Successful applicants will be required to provide academic and attendance references.
Continuing Students: please refer to the conditions set by the department.
Method of Assessment
This course has a mixture of written and practical assessments, reports and an e-portfolio.
Future Prospects
Some learners move directly into employment including boarding kennels, SSPCA, Guide Dogs, pet shops and veterinary practices. Learners may apply to progress to NC Zoo Animal Care, Behaviour and Welfare or HNC Animal Care.
