MA Level 3 Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
Entry requirements

Candidates must be employed within the motor vehicle industry. All candidates will be interviewed with their employer to ensure correct criteria is met.

Course content
Topics covered include:
  • Automotive health and safety
  • Skills in materials
  • Fabrication
  • Devices used in the automotive environment
  • Routine vehicle maintenance
  • Diagnose and rectify vehicle transmission systems and faults
  • Diagnose and rectify vehicle electrical systems and faults
  • Diagnose and rectify chassis systems and faults
  • Diagnose and rectify lubrication and cooling system faults
  • Automotive underpinning knowledge and skills

Essential skills are also a mandatory part of any MA framework and the following will be studied at SCQF Level 5 as part of the course: numeracy, communication, working with others, problem solving and information technology. The theory elements are assessed by online multi-choice tests. There is also a series of practical assignments and the completion of a portfolio.

Qualifications achieved

Each apprentice is required to achieve one of the following qualifications:

  • City & Guilds: SVQ 3 Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 7 GG6E 23
  • City & Guilds:: SVQ 3 Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair at SCQF Level 7 GD02 23
Core skills
Each apprentice is required to achieve the following core skills:
  • Communication SCQF Level 5
  • Numeracy SCQF Level 5
  • Information Technology SCQF Level 5
  • Working with Others SCQF Level 5
  • Problem Solving SCQF Level 5
Duration

The Modern Apprenticeship will take a total of 4 years to complete. Candidates will be work based and are reviewed by an assessor every 10-13 weeks throughout the duration of the programme. Candidates will attend College once a week on a day release basis. A further year of work place experience is required to become a fully qualified vehicle mechanic.
