Modern Apprenticeship – Life Sciences
I’m 100% chuffed with how it was all put together and how it became an enjoyable experience for me more than a chore to get through. Completing this course has now got me a permanent position within my Local Authority, which is a huge achievement, and a big portion of that is because of everyone at D&A who helped me get through the course.
Will Miller from Perth has just completed an MA in Life Sciences. He now has a flourishing career as a school technician, a clear picture of how he wants to progress and above all a strong sense of self belief.
It wasn’t always so. After leaving school, Will had begun a full-time course at another college and had struggled. Having come home to assess the situation, he was preparing to join the RAF when he saw the advert for a Modern Apprentice at Perth Grammar. The course involved completing SVQ up to level 7 and an HNC in Applied Science. He would need to attend college one day a week over two years to complete the course.
“It was luck really that made me choose the MA over a career in the RAF. I was prepared to do either and I told myself that I would go with the first one that replied. But, boy, what a good choice this has turned out to be."
Since then Will has barely faltered and puts much of his success down to the excellent support he received from Dundee and Angus College.
“I feel the MA course I completed at D&A College was superbly given, that includes all parts of the HNC and SVQ. All tutors in the college taking the HNC course were very supportive of all candidates and had all the time to give if there was a problem needing to be addressed. This goes for the SVQ assessor, Zubda Syed, as well, extremely helpful and informative when approached. I would highly recommend an MA at D&A College for these reasons and more”
Zubda Syed says the course covers a whole range of subjects including, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Statistics, DNA, Genetics, Human Body, Presentation Skills and also undertaking a research project—Graded Unit along with a relevant SVQ at Level 3.
“Will was a willing and able student who worked hard through the course and made great efforts to complete the apprenticeship successfully. He was always positive about completing the course and was always happy to take feedback into full account. I am very pleased with the very positive outcome of his apprenticeship as a permanent role as school technician at St. John’s Academy Perth and wish him all the best and success for his future. It was a pleasure working with Will.”
