Modern Apprenticeship – Design and Draughting
What Robyn Munro loves about being a Modern Apprentice is the flexibility. Robyn applied for her job as a Trainee Piping Designer at AMEC in Aberdeen at the age of 17. She had already completed an HNC in Engineering at college and had applied to continue with an HND, when she saw the advert for a Modern Apprentice in Design and Draughting.
“Don’t get me wrong, I loved college at the time, but this was just too good an opportunity to miss. What I love about learning on the job is the different challenges you face on a day-to-day basis. I can be working on three to four different workscopes at a time. My job is varied, challenging and enjoyable. You are always working to meet project deadlines and you feel a sense of achievement when you hit them.”
Robyn attended college for selected courses during her apprenticeship and is mentored by her college assessor. Her course included Welding Appreciation, Material Testing & NDT Testing and is dictated by the needs of AMEC.
AMEC’s Moira Cutler is in charge of the Modern Apprenticeship programme within the company “Robyn says the courses she attended at college while an apprentice were relevant and extremely helpful. She has learnt about different aspects of the job which she would never have experienced. Everything she has learnt while at AMEC and college has been interesting and helped her progress to where she is today.”
