Professor Meredith Aquila, who specialises in communication studies and theatre, and civil rights expert and history lecturer Dr Lynette Garrett, arrived at the college on Monday, March 6.

Lynette’s main academic interest is US history 19th and 20th century and the lecturer will be giving talks across the city on the American civil rights movement, the US civil war, and slavery.

As well as an address to history students at D&A College, Lynette will also visit Morgan Academy where she will give a talk on civil rights.

“That films such as Hidden Figures, which reveals the contribution of black women at NASA in the 1960s, still have the power to cause a stir on both sides of the Atlantic exemplifies just how much interest remains in the civil rights struggle and the contributions of underrepresented groups in the history of the United States,” said Lynette.

Meredith is working with D&A’s Future Talent initiative which concentrates on employability skills and will be giving a lecture on public speaking and becoming involved with a Future Talent workshop and giving an address on CV building and interview techniques at D&A Kingsway Campus.

Now in its sixth year the partnership between D&A and NOVA has become very well established, there is a Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations, instigated by Anne Cant, D&A international and marketing manager, and Dr Jimmie McClellan, Dean of Liberal Arts from NOVA.

There are currently six D&A College students enjoying classes in the USA.

Supported by Erasmus+ three acting and performance students and three students from interactive media courses are spending three months at the NOVA campus in Alexandria just outside Washington DC.

Erasmus (European Region Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students) is an EU-funded student exchange programme.
