The inspiration behind Liz's top photo

Release Date: 10 April 2018

The focus was on photography at Dundee and Angus College recently when staff and students were encouraged to vote for their favourite image with a 'Happiness' theme.

DA Photo Comp 1
(L to R) Lesley Thom from Camaraderie, Peanut and Liz proudly displaying Liz’s winning image.

Twenty amazing entries were displayed at the Gardyne Campus by members of Camaraderie, an LBT photography group for women across the east of Scotland. This has become an annual event at the college and is held in conjunction with Dundee Women’s Festival.

This year’s worthy winner was Student Services Officer Liz Martin from Arbroath with her photograph entitled ‘Winter Wonderland’, which won her the prize of a voucher for a meal for two at the college’s KC training restaurant.

The inspiration behind the image came from Peanut – a dog Liz recently adopted from a Spanish Rescue Centre.

“This was one of his first times out in the snow and it was just a beautiful moment with the trees and the surroundings,” remembers Liz. “As the subject of the competition was happiness, I felt that this photo was very appropriate. Peanut brings me so much happiness and I couldn’t be more delighted taking those photos. I had just grabbed that shot on my mobile phone when we were out walking. There was no preparation or setting up of a big camera, just me and my mobile taking random photos, so I was absolutely delighted when I won.

“My initial thought was to name my canvas ‘Happiness comes with four legs and a waggy tail’ but I thought the scenery was too stunning to not include that in my title.

“It’s a great feeling walking around the campus knowing my canvas is there for others to view. I’m very proud of my wee Peanut!”
