Students’ Gleneagles success

D&A College students’ attitude to success has helped them win the right to attend a high-end professional cookery seminar at one of Scotland’s leading hotels.

A group of four SVQ (level 3) patisserie and confectionery students have been granted HITS (Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland) bursaries to take part in a two-day workshop at Gleneagles Hotel attended by some of the top chefs in the country.

As part of their application Szilard Szentesi (33), Shannon Tuckett (30), Hannah Pill (19) and Daniel Turnill (33). All from Dundee, each had to undergo a rigorous test, including writing a 300-word answer to a question that continues to puzzles us all: ‘how would you value success?’

Szilard took the view that finding work that you liked meant you were in the right place.

“Perhaps real success is carving out a career doing something you really like, love in fact, then your work is never drudge,” said the student.

Daniel looked at the little things in life that make people happy, saying:

“Achieving goals – even just in a day-to-day tasks – can bring a huge sense of achievement.”

This theme was continued by Hannah and Shannon who also identified challenges and achievement as a route to success.

“There is no one way to measure success but having new goals to aim for and overcoming new challenges is always rewarding,” said Hannah.

While Shannon commented: “I reflected on my own progression though life and that helped identify all the achievements – some quite small – that collectively can describe success.”

The students are gearing up for their trip to Gleneagles, where they expect to meet some of the country’s top chefs, by developing their confectionary skills in the training kitchens at D&A College Kingsway Campus.
