“I first heard about Foundation Apprenticeships at a Parent and Teacher meeting at my high school in 2016,” says Anna. “Dundee and Angus College was promoting its new FA courses. I wasn’t sure what career I wanted at the time so thought I would try something new and gain some more experience.”

Anna chose to study a Foundation Apprenticeship in Social Services and Young People.

“The course I was a part of lasted for two whole school years with a mixture of school work, studying at D&A College and doing placement work at a local nursery.

“Managing my time was probably the most challenging part of the whole experience. At points it was a bit difficult to do all my school work and the college work as well but I got it all done with the help of my college lecturers. It took place during my last two years at school so I had a lot of study periods which helped.”

Anna felt the Foundation Apprenticeship gave her the opportunity to meet all sorts of people and pick up a range of different skills.

“I enjoyed the opportunity to experience life at college and also what it would be like to be in a proper working environment. It really gave me a taster of my different options for when I left school and it helped me decide that working with children is something I would really like to do!”

Anna has now secured a post with Angus Council as a Modern Apprentice in Child Care (Early Years).
“This is an amazing opportunity where I will be working in a school nursery on an 18-month placement,” says Anna. “I will be full-time in the nursery alongside other staff members but will also receive training and attend college once a month to study for my qualification.

“I’m really looking forward to learning new skills, knowledge and tips on how to work better with the children.”
