ESOL Literacies for English Language Teachers

Course Content

This online course will offer a range of practical ideas for working with ESOL Literacy learners, from very basic literacy learners to low-level ESOL learners with literacy needs (up to SQA N2).

It will explore ways of developing activities for teaching the skills of Reading, Writing, Phonics, Spelling, Listening, Speaking, Digital and Numeracy. In addition, there will be a session on appropriate diagnostic testing materials and their importance for assessment and placement.

The course activities will be adaptable for face-to-face and online teaching. There will be opportunities for collaboration and discussion with co-learners and an introduction to various ESOL Literacy resources.

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for teachers, tutors, and volunteers who have worked or are working with ESOL Literacy learners.

Non-native English speakers require a level of English at Upper-Intermediate/B2 or above.

Applicants should have an interest in developing skills to better support ESOL Literacy learners, from diagnostic assessment to planning and delivering materials and activities, as well as supporting learners’ digital skills.

Method of Assessment

This course is not formally assessed. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the course.

Future Prospects

Successful participants will be able to integrate ESOL Literacies methodologies into their existing lessons or progress to further ESOL teacher training courses within D&A College.
