Meet Joan Mitchell

Joan previously worked as a nurse before joining Dundee and Angus College in 2016 as a lecturer in Health and Social Care.

“I had always had a strong interest in teaching. My previous role as a nurse advisor gave me the opportunity to get involved in educating students and training staff – this gave me so much job satisfaction that I was excited to make the move to teaching full-time. I find that recalling certain experiences from my nursing career during lessons generates interest in the subject and helps learners understand what the ‘real world’ or nursing is really like.”

For Joan, there is no better feeling than seeing her students succeed.

“Seeing students flourish and gain the knowledge, skills and experience that enables them to successfully progress in the career they have always dreamed of is the most rewarding aspect of my role. It is our responsibility as lecturers to provide engaging lessons, encourage our learners to stay motivated and support them to achieve their goals. When it comes to teaching, I believe that being enthusiastic and passionate about the topics being taught is what creates a stimulating learning environment.”
