Cheryl celebrates success at national competition!
Dundee and Angus College Barbering student, Cheryl McKenzie, impressed the industry judges at the prestigious Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) national competition on 23 May where she was crowned runner-up in the Men’s Barbering Cut and Finish category.
Cheryl, who has recently completed Level 3 Barbering at the College’s Arbroath Campus, was initially unsure when her lecturer suggested entering the awards: “I did pause and think, maybe I’m too old?” she explains, “but then I thought I might not ever get the chance to enter a competition again!”
Earlier in the year Cheryl competed in the regional heats in Edinburgh where she finished in third place, securing her place at the national finals in Blackpool. She was tasked with cutting and styling a modern men’s haircut and brought along one of her regular clients in the College salon, Stewart Ramsay, to act as her live model.
“I was quite nervous at the event as there were so many people competing, but once the competition started and I began cutting, I zoned out. It was a relief once I had finished though! The judges were quite scrupulous and kept going back and checking my work. I was really pleased to discover that I had been awarded second place when the results were announced at the end of the day.”
Debbie Donaldson, Curriculum and Quality Leader for Hair and Beauty at Dundee and Angus College, is delighted to see Cheryl’s talents being recognised: “Cheryl has been with us this session building on her existing skills and has now successfully completed her VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Barbering. She has been an absolute pleasure to teach, a fantastic support to her peers and always eager in every class. To win this national award is testament to the commitment and drive Cheryl has shown throughout her time with us. We are all so very proud of her and wish her well for her future in Barbering!”
Well done, Cheryl!
