Student Story: Noelle's Engineering Journey

Hi, I’m Noelle Copland, a 20-year-old Automotive Engineering student here at Dundee & Angus College. I wanted a career that was both hands-on and challenging, and growing up around cars and helping my dad in the garage sparked a lifelong interest in the motor industry.

Finding My Path

During the week, you will find me hands-on with cars, covered in grease, but on the weekends, I love embracing my girly side, designing tattoos, doing my nails, and spending time with my horses. Balancing these interests with my chosen career path was so important to me, so I wanted a course that not only matched my passions for cars and bikes but also gave me the practical skills to thrive in the motor trade.  D&A College offered the perfect fit and hearing great feedback from a previous apprentice at the garage made the decision even easier.

First Steps at College

Starting college was less daunting than I expected, thanks to the welcoming atmosphere created by the lecturers.  They are always up for a laugh but ready to help when you need them. One of my most memorable moments so far was walking into the canteen during a lunch break and finding a big karaoke session happening. It’s little moments like this that make D&A such a great place to learn, enjoy yourself, and feel part of a community.

Breaking Barriers in the Motor Trade

As a woman entering a male-dominated industry, I knew there would be challenges, but I haven’t let them hold me back. Being in a class full of men hasn’t dampened my passion for the trade or my confidence. In fact, I’m proud of proving myself every day and showing that I know my stuff, even when some might underestimate me.

This journey hasn’t just been about building my own skills, it’s also been about helping other women see that this industry is for them too. If you have a passion for cars and bikes, there’s no reason why you can’t succeed in the motor trade.

Advice for Future Students

If you’re thinking about coming to D&A, my advice is simple, go for it! Time won’t wait for you, and there are so many opportunities out there for those who take the leap. Trust me, you won’t regret it.

Looking Ahead

My dream is to become a fully qualified mechanic and completing my course at D&A is a big step toward making that happen. Beyond that, I want to keep inspiring other women to pursue careers in the motor industry, showing them that with determination and passion, anything is possible.  D&A has been the perfect starting point for turning my dream into reality.
