Embracing the Future: Electric Vehicle Repair Training with CD Copland Motors

At Dundee & Angus College, we are committed to forging strong relationships to allow businesses to be equipped to handle industry trends and technological advancements.

Our recent collaboration with CD Copland Motors demonstrates how bespoke training can empower businesses enabling their mechanics to smoothly transition into the era of electric vehicles (EVs). This partnership not only highlights the success of our collaborative, industry-led approach to training but demonstrates how other local garages can follow in their footsteps.

Focused on Equality and Progress

Co-owned by Callum and Diane Copland, CD Copland Motors embarked on a mission to revolutionise their garage prior to the pandemic. Forward-looking co-owner Callum Copland was passionate about cultivating an inclusive work environment where every team member, regardless of gender, receives the same high standard of training. "I believe everyone should be trained equally, so we're all working off the same hymn sheet," says Copland. In this traditional industry, the garage's progressive approach supports their employee’s growth and confidence, ensuring that equality is at the heart of their workplace.

The Need for Electric Vehicle Training

With electric vehicles becoming increasingly prevalent, it's crucial for businesses to adapt and prepare for this shift. Dundee & Angus College worked alongside CD Copland Motors to address this need through a bespoke training program which aligns with the current needs of the motor industry to ensure garages like CD Coplands Motors are well-equipped to future-proof their operations.

Our engineering department worked closely with CD Copland Motors to identify the skills gaps in their workforce. We then tailored our courses to suit their specific needs, focusing on the types of vehicles they handle. This collaboration ensured that their technicians could safely work on electric and hybrid vehicles, equipping them with the necessary skills to perform relevant repairs.

Overcoming Fears and Embracing Change

While there was some initial hesitation from Callum Copland towards the electrical aspects of vehicle repair, the comprehensive training provided by Dundee & Angus College helped him and his team to overcome these fears. "The training was an eye-opener for us. We now have no fears about handling electric vehicles and working on them safely," Copland said. This newfound confidence has enabled CD Copland Motors to expand their services to include electric and hybrid cars and motorcycles, showcasing the vast opportunities available even to small independent garages.

Preparing for the Future

The transportation sector is undergoing a significant transformation, with electric vehicles poised to dominate the market. To stay competitive and be prepared for the future, it’s essential for businesses to invest in their employee’s skills and development. While many garages are still focused on servicing fuel-powered vehicles, the shift to electric is inevitable. By partnering with Dundee & Angus College, CD Copland Motors are ensuring that they stay one step ahead, with their employees gaining the much-needed skills to cope with the latest technological developments in the motor industry.

A Successful Partnership

The successful partnership with CD Copland Motors has flourished over three years, with the college supporting them with training and ongoing consultation, addressing any queries promptly and efficiently. The college was praised by Callum Copland for going "over and beyond from day one," not only providing the company with the expertise and resources needed to facilitate this transition but for their ongoing support as they explore future college training opportunities.
