Higher Human Biology
Course Content
This course is an online course with weekly lecturer-led classes via Teams to cover the course content. You will be expected to attend campus for assessments and practical work. The course is designed to develop an understanding of a wide range of biological and molecular topics such as stem cells; differentiation in somatic and germline cells; the research and therapeutic value of stem cells; structure and replication of DNA; gene expression; metabolic pathways; cellular respiration; the transmission and control of infectious diseases; and human reproduction. Through these topics, learners will develop scientific research skills, analytical and evaluation skills and will be able to apply these skills through scientific communication.
Entry Requirements
National 5 (B grade) or Intermediate 2 (B grade) qualification in a Biology subject. Applicants will also be required to attend an interview, provide suitable references and may be asked to sit a short diagnostic test.
Method of Assessment
Learners will be assessed on course work, which will be submitted to SQA. Learners will also be assessed through the completion of an external exam.
Future Prospects
This qualification will enable access to HNC Applied Sciences or undergraduate programmes at university.
