Sustainability

D&A College wants to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter future for our College, our region and our communities.

Dundee and Angus College is leading the way in sustainability efforts within Scotland's college sector, with an ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions well ahead of national targets. Under the leadership of Principal Simon Hewitt, who has been appointed as Colleges Scotland's lead Principal for Climate Emergency, the College is committed to reaching net zero for scopes 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. This ambitious goal is part of a broader strategy to support Scotland's net zero emissions target by 2045, with the college sector aiming for 2040 or earlier.

The College's Climate Emergency Action Plan outlines several key initiatives, including replacing all gas-fired technologies with renewable alternatives, transitioning to electric vehicles, and eliminating plastic waste. Additionally, the College has pledged to incorporate sustainability into all curriculum areas, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as a framework. These efforts build on a decade of significant achievements, including a 63% reduction in carbon emissions since 2010 and the installation of sustainable technologies like biomass plants, solar panels, and energy-efficient systems.

Dundee and Angus College has pioneered various green initiatives, being the first institution in Scotland to eliminate disposable cups, replace takeaway containers with compostable products, and utilise recycled plastic for roads and car parks. The College's commitment to sustainability extends beyond its own operations and plays a crucial role in the Energy Skills Partnership (ESP), a collaboration designed to enhance Scotland's capacity to meet industry demands in the energy, engineering, and construction sectors. This partnership is recognised as the strategic agency leading the Climate Emergency and the Climate Emergency Skills Action Plan.

Principal Hewitt emphasises the importance of preparing students for the green agenda and supporting local businesses in their sustainability efforts. Dundee and Angus College strives to leave a lasting legacy for future generations by leading by example and fostering strong partnerships. The College's comprehensive approach to sustainability addresses environmental issues and ensures that its teaching, learning, estates, operations, and partnerships align with climate emergency goals.
