Linlathen Fairness Initiative Delivers Lasting Change Through Education and Community Collaboration

The Linlathen Fairness Initiative (LFI) has shown what can be achieved when communities and partners unite around a shared vision of fairness, wellbeing and opportunity

Launched in 2021 as part of Dundee’s wider commitment to tackling child poverty, the LFI brought together Dundee City Council, Dundee & Angus College, local organisations and residents to co-design solutions that respond directly to the community needs.

By embedding the Dundee & Angus College Community Engagement team within the Linlathen Hub, the College gained a deeper understanding of the barriers local residents face in accessing education. Working alongside community partners and the Student Services team, our staff opened doors for learning opportunities and future careers.

The College also played a pivotal role by delivering accredited short courses locally in areas such as health and social care and childcare. As a result, 31 residents gained new qualifications and practical skills to enhance their employment prospects. Some sessions brought parents and children together, helping to bridge generational divides, reignite a love of learning and enable families to develop essential life skills together. This also transformed attitudes towards education - shifting from a general distrust to enthusiasm, ultimately changing the community dialogue around learning.

Over three years, the impact of the LFI has been transformative. Local families accessed more than £250,000 in additional income and benefits, 103 people gained employment - including 27 from Linlathen itself - and hundreds participated in wellbeing and community activities that boosted confidence, skills and social connection.

Dundee & Angus College is delighted to have redefined educational pathways in one of Dundee’s most challenged areas, delivering real change in one of the UK’s most deprived communities.
