Football can be an uncertain career, with a low percentage of players progressing to the professional level. Additionally, injuries can abruptly end a promising career, leaving players with limited options. Recognising these challenges, D&A College sought to provide DUFC players with the tools and qualifications needed to succeed in alternative careers.

Solution

D&A College collaborated with DUFC to offer the SVQ Award in Sports Coaching at Level 5. This programme includes four key units: safeguarding, planning, delivery, and evaluation. These modules are designed to help players develop coaching skills and other competencies that are valuable in various professional roles that they can use if they do not make it as a professional footballer.

To enhance the programme's effectiveness, D&A College enlisted the expertise of Stevie Baxter, a seasoned sports professional with global experience. Stevie's involvement ensured that the training was not only comprehensive but also relevant to real-world scenarios, giving the players a competitive edge in their post-football careers.

Result

The partnership has been a resounding success, with players gaining new skills and confidence in their ability to pursue careers beyond football. The programme has expanded to explore additional career paths, including trades and hairdressing, ensuring that every player has a solid foundation for the future.
