Esports Students Host Next-Level Events

Our second-year Esports Foundation Degree students showcased their skills this week, organising two incredible events as part of their Event Management module.

From start to finish, they took the lead in planning, production, and delivery to create unforgettable experiences for players and viewers alike.

One group hosted the Scottish Esports League (SEL) Invitational, a national tournament featuring League of Legends, Rocket League, and Counter-Strike. After intense online playoffs, the top teams battled it out in our Esports Studios during the finals on Wednesday and Thursday, with 20 teams competing for a spot in the prestigious SEL tournament.

The second group organised Winter Slam, a Rocket League tournament for Dundee secondary school students. Young players competed in the buzzing atmosphere in our Esports Studios on Friday as they showcased their skills.

Our students managed every detail, from streaming and casting the events to arranging setups and handling the technical aspects. Their efforts were rewarded with more than 1,000 total views, 50-100 concurrent viewers, and fantastic feedback from attendees and sponsors. Speaking of sponsors, the students secured support from Corsair, Irn-Bru, and Domino’s Dundee to raise an impressive £450 for Special Effect, a charity supporting physically disabled gamers.

Beyond the digital stage, our students demonstrated crucial life skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving to create a sense of community and make these events a huge success. Reflecting on their experience, one of our students said, “It was hard work, but went fantastic. All the theoretical and practical work we’ve learned has allowed us to broaden our skills and put our broadcast and production knowledge into action.”
