Dundee & Angus College Celebrates First Graduates of Pilot Health and Fitness Programmes
Dundee & Angus College’s new pilot programmes are reshaping Scotland’s health and fitness sector by empowering graduates to lead positive change in community health.
At their recent Graduation Ceremony on Friday 1st November, Dundee & Angus College celebrated the success of its HNC and HND Physical Activity and Health Courses which are designed to equip graduations with the skills and expertise to thrive in the growing health and fitness industry.
With an impressive 91% success rate, the pilot programme has not only provided students with a qualification, it has created meaningful career pathways with students securing employment across local organisations. Of the 20 students enrolled on the programme, 17 graduated successfully with nine of them now continuing their education at university level.
Student, Finlay Carnegie said: “College has helped me in my chosen career as a personal trainer as it gave me industry knowledge that helped me become a better trainer and gave me unique experiences and skills to develop my practice. I truly believe all the experience and knowledge gained throughout my years at college will significantly help me in the future as a personal trainer.”
In response to Scotland’s evolving health needs, particularly the needs of older adults, Dundee & Angus College collaborated with industry leaders and community partners to develop a curriculum that directly addresses these demands head on. By focusing on areas like health referrals and community health, the course equips students to support individuals in managing health conditions, mobility challenges and lifestyle changes.
Sarah Ramminger, Head of Curriculum and Quality at Dundee & Angus College, said: “Our partnership in the Angus Sport and Physical Activity Framework, developed in partnership with Angus Alive, NHS Tayside, Angus Council, and mental health services, has been key to the programme’s success. Together we are building the future generation of fitness professionals who understand the value of community health.”
The course offers an industry-driven curriculum and provides students with more than £4,000 of industry-recognised qualifications, including highly sought-after Les Mills strength and development training. Delivered as part of the course, this professional training allows graduates to enter the workforce with recognised credentials at no additional cost.
The impact of the programme is already being felt locally with five out of six Personal Trainers at Angus Alive being Dundee & Angus College alumni, showcasing the impact our courses have in shaping skilled professionals for the fitness industry.
Scott Nicoll, Angus Alive, said: “Our partnership with Dundee & Angus College has been incredibly rewarding. The graduates from these new programmes bring both the skills and a genuine passion for health improvement, which is exactly what our communities need.”
Dundee & Angus College is redefining health and fitness education by empowering students to drive meaningful change in their communities and address Scotland’s evolving demographic needs. As these graduates step into the workforce, they bring with them not only expertise but a commitment to building healthier, more active communities alongside industry and local partners
