Dundee and Angus College Student Selected for Scottish Student Sport Men’s National Football Squad

We’re proud to announce an exciting first for Dundee and Angus College. HND Sports Coaching and Development student Darren Watson has been selected to represent Scotland as part of the Scottish Student Sport 2025/2026 Men’s National Football Squad.

Darren has spent the past two years studying within the College’s Sport and Fitness department and plays an active role in the Dundee and Angus College football team, both on and off the pitch. It was through his involvement with the team that he was encouraged to trial for national selection. “My lecturer put my name forward and urged me to go, he thought I’d have a high chance in getting selected. I had played for two years at BUCS league for college and thought that standard was good – so I thought my ability might be good enough for the national team”.

The Dundee and Angus College football team is currently competing in the BUCS league for the first time in almost ten years following a reinstatement of the team. They are currently sitting at the top of their league - a fantastic achievement for the College and a perfect launchpad for Darren to progress his football skills at national level.

Following trials at Stirling University against some of the top student footballers in Scotland, Darren was selected as one of only three college students to make the squad. While he admits he was initially nervous competing against players from some of Scotland’s largest universities, he hopes his experience will inspire others. “People that go to college can absolutely do it too. If you have the skill and belief in yourself, you should go for it.”

As part of the Scottish Student Sport Men’s Football National Squad, Darren will have the opportunity to play against professional and semi professional teams, as well as compete in a home game against the Welsh selection and an away game against the Irish selection. “It’s a proud moment to represent nationally. I’m really excited to network with other students and see how my ability compares at this level.”

Alongside his studies and football commitments, Darren hopes to build a career in sports coaching or as a PE teacher. He credits both his course and football involvement at the College with helping him grow in confidence. “It’s taken me out of my shell, helped me become my own person and shown me what I can do.”

We’re incredibly proud of Darren and wish him every success as he represents both Dundee and Angus College and Scottish Student Sport on the national stage.
