D&A College Secures £10,000 to Launch Innovative VR E-Tennis Project
Dundee and Angus College is delighted to have received £10,000 in funding to run an E-tennis project in partnership with global technology leaders VTEC.
Thanks to the support of the NHS Charitable Foundation, this funding will help enhance student wellbeing and increase opportunities for physical activity across the College.
The project was launched officially as part of e-sports students’ wellbeing event ‘Live Well at D&A’ on Wednesday 3rd December.
VTEC E-tennis is an online platform created by former tennis professionals that blends tennis coaching with esports through engaging Virtual Reality (VR) technology. The funding will enable the College to invest in VR headsets, software, licences and operational costs, allowing the equipment to be rolled out across all campuses.
The aim of the project is to give every student - regardless of background, social status, or ability - access to the world’s most realistic virtual tennis experience. The programme combines physical tennis training with data-driven learning, offering STEM-aligned lessons and progressive skill development in areas such as footwork, stroke technique, and strategy. Dundee and Angus College plans to embed the VR system into a range of course curriculum, as well as include it within its structured wellbeing programme.
This innovative approach will bring a wide range of benefits to both students and staff. VR tennis provides a fun, low-barrier way to get active, encouraging regular movement in a safe and supportive environment. Its mix of gameplay, coaching and tournament elements also promotes social interaction, confidence-building and a rewarding sense of achievement.
The partnership between Dundee and Angus College and VTEC extends well beyond equipment provision. As part of the collaboration, VTEC is offering meaningful work experience for computing students and supporting them in delivering student-led tournaments. With the additional funding this partnership will be further strengthened, positioning Dundee and Angus College to become the first college in Scotland to achieve VTEC Esports Centre of Excellence status.
Brooklyn, a second-year Esports degree student who organised the ‘Live Well at D&A’ event, said “I was really keen to work with VTEC because their mission to use esports to positively impact individuals’ lifestyles aligns with my own interest in inclusive, community-focused practice. This project has given me a great opportunity to build industry experience in an area that matters to me personally and professionally.”
VTEC, UK Partnerships Director for Education & Events, Stuart Kosters said, “We want to provide equal opportunity to provide something that is engaging and builds the bridge between sports and games. We’re all about opportunity and want everyone to have access to tech to participate in sport and digital tech.”
