10th Annual Game Jam Sparks Creativity
Our Computing Department celebrated a decade of creativity and innovation with its 10th annual Game Jam, bringing students, alumni, and industry experts together for a vibrant two-day event.
Students from across the Computing Department joined forces to design and develop games based on a mystery theme revealed at the start of day one. This year’s theme was ‘10’ to celebrate both the 10th annual Game Jam and the close of the College’s 10th anniversary.
Over two intense days, students worked hard to create inventive and engaging games before pitching their completed projects to a panel of industry judges from Ninja Kiwi, Jagex Games, and Discovery Games.
After a lot of discussions, the judges crowned ‘Code Crafters’ as the overall winner for their outstanding creativity and execution. Additional awards were presented for Best Gameplay, Best Graphics and Design, and Most Promising Game.
Adam Dent, a current HND Games Development student, said: “I have enjoyed the short time frame that makes you think quickly and stops you from overthinking the process or second guessing yourself. You start to see how much you can get done in such a short space of time. The Game Jam has really let me do different things from the field of game design and put what I have learned into practical use.”
The Game Jam also welcomed our alumni back to their roots, with eight former Dundee & Angus College students who are now studying at Abertay University volunteering to support the teams. This year’s Game Jam also saw graduates from the very first Game Jam returning to support and offer industry expertise to our current students.
Cameron Moody, Discovery Education and Dundee & Angus alumni said: “Coming back to the Game Jam and supporting the students along with other alumni has been great fun. It really helps students to understand the importance of teamwork and then use their final creation as part of a portfolio piece or something to help them when they go on to university or get a job in the industry.”
The Game Jam continues to be a highlight in the College calendar for our students and each year serves as a springboard for innovation and inspiration where our students can showcase their creativity and skill. Congratulations to all participants and winners, and a huge thank you to the judges, helpers, and staff who made the 10th annual Game Jam a resounding success.
