Student Story: Kelly Connor - Science

Introducing student Kelly, who dove back into education after two decades to follow her passion for science. She's conquering her college journey so far, having carried out a summer placement at the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science and progressing to HNC Applied Sciences.

Tell us a bit about yourself and why you came to D&A?

I have always been interested in forensics and have a keen interest in science from my background as a nail technician.

Since having had a significant life-changing experience, I thought it would be now or never, as I would have regretted not going for it. I have been out of education for 20 years, so I decided to ease myself in gently with D&A College before studying forensic science at Abertay University.

What's the scoop on your summer placement?

I completed a 12-week summer placement at the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee. My placement was funded by the Royal Society of Chemistry as part of their sustainable laboratories grant. The aim of my research was to see if the glass vials used when analysing drug samples could be reused. The main concern was that traces of the original drug might remain in the samples after washing, preventing their reuse. We tested lots of different solvents and vial types to develop a recycling procedure, and my work will be presented at the Chartered Society of Forensic Science conference on sustainability in December!

How do you balance coming to College with your personal interests and home life?

I'm fortunate to have a fantastic support network; however, maintaining the balance can sometimes prove challenging. My daughter motivates me to achieve.

I prioritise what is important, follow a strict schedule and routine, always have a plan of action, and have a dedicated study area.

What are the highlights of your College journey so far?

My journey has been a crazy, fun-filled learning adventure. I met incredible individuals and formed lifelong friends.

I achieved many of my goals and accomplishments, but not without challenges. For example, I was unwell in semester one and did not recover until halfway through semester two, but I pushed myself to achieve.

So far, the college has provided me with several opportunities in my new journey, and I am excited about the future.

What’s next for you, what are your goals?

This year, I progressed onto an HNC in Applied Science, which will take me to Abertay University, where I will study Forensic Science.

My goals are to achieve personal and professional growth, continuously learn and develop new skills, and positively impact society meaningfully.

And be the best role model for my daughter.
