Heavy Electric Vehicle Training: A Strategic Partnership with Xplore Dundee and McGill's
At Dundee & Angus College, we take pride in forming strategic business partnerships that drive innovation and skill development. Our collaboration with Xplore Dundee, part of the McGill's Group, is a prime example of how tailored training solutions can meet the evolving needs of modern industries. This partnership highlights the importance of proactive engagement and bespoke training in the rapidly advancing field of electric vehicles (EVs).
Meeting the Challenge of New Technology
In 2021, Xplore Dundee introduced heavy electric-powered vehicles to their fleet, marking a significant step towards sustainability and modernity. However, this transition brought the challenge of ensuring that their technicians were adequately trained to work with this new technology. Recognising this need, Xplore Dundee turned to Dundee & Angus College for a tailored training solution.
Frank Sheach, Fleet Engineer at Xplore Dundee, emphasised the critical need for specialised training: “We saw the necessity for our technicians to be proficient in handling these unique vehicles. Dundee & Angus College helped us create a bespoke training course focused on the safety and technical aspects of working with electric vehicles.”
Developing a Bespoke Training Solution
Initially, Dundee & Angus College could only provide light vehicle training. To meet the specific needs of Xplore Dundee and McGill's, we upskilled our staff through Continuous Professional Development (CPD) courses, with this investment enabling us to develop a comprehensive training programme tailored specifically for heavy electric vehicles.
We worked closely with industry, engaging directly with Xplore Dundee and McGill's to identify their skill gaps and precise training needs. Our collaboration ensured that the training provided was not just a generic course. Instead, we provided practical and relevant training which included real-life scenarios and industry-specific terminology, with feedback from bus technicians allowing us to further refine our course offering.
Delivering On-Site Training
One of the key advantages of our programme was the flexibility to deliver training on-site at Xplore Dundee’s premises. This approach minimised disruption to their operations and allowed technicians to train in a familiar environment with the actual vehicles they would be working on. The hands-on experience was invaluable in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Investing in the Future
As electric vehicles become increasingly common on our roads, it is vital for businesses to invest in training their staff. Technicians need the skills to service and maintain these advanced vehicles. By partnering with Dundee & Angus College, Xplore Dundee and McGill's are future-proofing their operations and ensuring their staff are equipped to handle the latest technological advancements.
Benefits Beyond Training
This strategic partnership extends beyond training, significantly contributing to staff retention and recruitment. Businesses that invest in their employees' development are more attractive to potential recruits and retain existing staff better, as Frank Sheach said: “Our technicians appreciate the investment in their personal development, which in turn benefits our business.”
Funding and Support
Our Business Partnership team worked diligently with Xplore Dundee to secure funding that helped offset the cost of the training courses. This support is part of our commitment to making training accessible and affordable for businesses, encouraging them to invest in their workforce's development.
Electric vehicles are not just the technology of the future; they are the technology of today. Investing in the right training now ensures that your business remains competitive and capable of handling new challenges as they arise.
