Course Content

This course is a great introduction for those interested to explore career opportunities working outdoors in the landbased sector; it is suitable for applicants who wish to learn about agricultural and horticulture, gardening machinery, food production, estate maintenance skills, safe working practices and who wish to progress to become work ready.


The course will help students gain an understanding of the countryside and the people who work there. It is a largely practical course which also has some basic academic units to help students deepen their knowledge. The essential skills units help students with numbers, language and other core skills needed for the modern worker.

Entry Requirements

No formal entry requirements. A demonstration of enthusiasm for working in agriculture/horticulture/estates. Some evidence of working at SCQF Level 4/National 4 would be of benefit.

Method of Assessment

A demonstration of practical skills and competence, a small number of written assessments and a short local agriculture project.

Future Prospects

Learners can progress onto SVQ Level 2 in Landscaping (Horticulture) at D&A College or Pre-Apprentice or Modern Apprentice training (at other institutions) or into rural work on farms, horticulture businesses and estates.
