Advanced Course Funding

For courses at HNC or above level.

You must apply for funding every year that you are studying as any application you make is only for one academic year.

You apply directly to SAAS. You should apply to SAAS for fees and a Bursary.

You can also decide to take out a Student Loan for living costs.

You must also meet the residency conditions.

The information below outlines the support available for 2022/2023.

Young Student

Independent Students

An independent student is a student who meets one of the following:

  • You are over 25 before the start of the academic year OR
  • You have supported yourself from earning or benefits outside full-time education for any 3 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course OR
  • You have a child who is dependent on you at the start of the academic year, who lives with you for the majority of the week OR
  • You have no living parents OR
  • You are married, in a civil partnership or live with a partner before the first day of the first academic year of your course OR
  • You are estranged from your parents

Other Grants

Students can also apply to SAAS for additional grants including:

  • Lone Parent Grant of £1,305 – this is available for students who are lone parents
  • Dependent’s Grant of £2640 – this is available for students who are financially responsible for another adult e.g. spouse/partner who they care for.

How to apply for SAAS Funding

You must apply for funding every year that your studying and you must apply directly to SAAS.

You will need to register for an online account through the SAAS website to make an application.

Students starting courses in August/September 2022 are able to apply from early April 2022 with applications closing on 31 March 2023.

Not from Scotland?

Students from England should apply to Student Finance England for a Tuition Fee Loan and Maintenance Loan for your living costs

Students from Northern Ireland should apply to Student Finance NI for a Tuition Fee Loan and any Maintenance Grants/Loans.

Students from Wales should apply to Student Finance Wales for a Tuition Fee Loan and any Grants/Maintenance Loan.
