D&A College students combined team building with a charitable act by setting up a ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ to help the city’s homeless.

With a class of 24 people, the HND admin and IT students wanted to promote team work and cohesion.

Madalina Ormenisan and Carolyn McDonald came up with a project idea which not only enhanced the classroom environment but helped others.

They contacted Transform Dundee who have a homeless shelter dealing with nearly 30 people, and asked if there was any way they could help and were supplied with a list of items that homeless people need.

The students arranged for boxes to be placed all over Gardyne Campus, and in an inversion of the traditional Advent Calendar, asked their fellow students to donate something each day in the run-up to Christmas.

The students put up posters around the campus encouraging the Christmas message of goodwill to all.

The boxes quickly filled with items such as cosy socks, scarves, hats and event toiletries.

“I was really amazed how this took off,” commented lecturer Wendy McEwan.

“The students did it all themselves, even contacting major retailers and supermarkets in the city to solicit donations.”

The campaign was so successful that the original shoe boxes that were used had to be upgraded to much larger ones!
