D&A College Principal has pledged the college will play a major role in ensuring that service jobs created by the Dundee Waterfront development will go to local people.
Addressing more than 400 college staff in Gardyne Theatre, the principal said that the development will bring thousands of jobs in hospitality and tourism to the city and urged that college resources are aimed at recruiting students onto course and programmes in these disciplines to ensure people have the qualifications demanded by employers once the £1 billion project is completed.
“This development will bring real jobs – jobs that can make a huge difference to people’s lives to people in this area, offering career paths in hospitality, catering and tourism,” said the principal.
“The Waterfront development is already attracting big names in the hospitality industry and we must ensure that people have the skills to take up the opportunities that will be on offer in future.”
Grant was speaking at a Back To Basics event designed to support college staff meet the challenges of the future.
With more than 1000 members of staff D&A College is one of the biggest employers in the area and contributes more than £30million into the local economy supporting training for industry and commerce.
“The college has a hugely positive impact on the economy both locally and beyond,” said the principal.
“The range of services we can offer is often overlooked, perhaps because we offer about 1000 different programmes to school leavers and mature students, but we also offer a range of services to the businesses both small and large and look forward to forging links with employers who aim to be involved with the Waterfront Development.
“Investors, developers, entrepreneurs and financiers are responding to calls for businesses to invest in the city and capitalise on £1 billion of tourism spending forecast during the next ten years and it is estimated that around 7000 new jobs will be created – D&A College must ensure that the local workforce is trained to take up these positions.”
