Short courses Autumn 2020

As one of the largest adult skills training providers in the Dundee and Angus area, we can develop and adapt courses to suit the needs of individuals and businesses in this region.

To assist with the transition to a new normal, we are currently offering a selection of Management and Health & Safety/Risk Assessment online bite-sized training courses, which take between 1.5-2 hours to complete.

Management online bite-sized courses

Leading a Team
A course including discussions on skills and traits of good leadership incorporating styles of leadership and shared good practice.

Managing Change
In this course, we will discuss external and internal changes affecting organisations, reasons for change, why staff resist change and approaches that can be taken to help overcome resistance.

Communication
Many companies have poor communication strategies. In this course, we explore different methods of communication and stress the importance of active listening and relationship building in the organisation.

Motivation
In these turbulent times, it can be difficult to motivate staff. In this course, we will discuss extrinsic and intrinsic motivational factors and approaches that can be taken to build a motivated team.

Challenging Conversations with Customers and Colleagues Online
This short course aims to offer an awareness of the following:

  • What is a challenging conversation and why do they happen?
  • How to choose the appropriate form of communication when responding.
  • Understanding your response to challenging conversations.
  • Understanding your communication preferences and the communication preferences of others.
  • Start with the end in mind - planning your conversations for a successful outcome

Hosting, Presenting and Lecturing Online
This short course aims to offer an awareness of the following:

  • How to host and chair an online/video meeting.
  • The fundamental differences between presenting face-to-face and on camera.
  • Why body-language and presentation energy are now even more important.
  • Understanding your role and responsibilities as host.
  • Ensuring your presentation stands out from all the others - the art of storytelling.

Growth Mindset while Working Remotely for Individuals and Teams
This short course aims to offer an awareness of the following:

  • What is Growth Mindset and why is it now more important than ever, for professional and personal growth?
  • Understanding the power of Growth Mindset and winning business remotely.
  • Understanding your communication preferences and the communication preferences of others.
  • The Power of 'Yet'.
  • Practising 'self-care' - The Art of Being Selfish.

Health & Safety online bite-sized courses

Asbestos Awareness
This short course aims to offer an awareness of the following:

  • The properties of asbestos and its effects on health, including the increased risk of lung cancer for asbestos workers who smoke;
  • The types, uses and likely occurrence of asbestos and ACMs in buildings and plant;
  • The general procedures to be followed to deal with an emergency, for example an uncontrolled release of asbestos dust into the workplace;
  • How to avoid the risks from asbestos, for example for building work, no employee should carry out work which disturbs the fabric of a building unless the employer has confirmed that ACMs are not present;
  • Selection and use of PPE, decontamination and waste disposal

Working at Height
This short course will offer awareness in recognising the principles of safe working at height & the importance of risk assessment prior to any working at height activity to develop an understanding of the Working at Height Regulations 2005

COSHH Awareness
This short course aims to offer an awareness of the following:

  • Outline the forms of, the classification of, and the health risks from exposure to, hazardous substances.
  • Explain the factors to be considered when undertaking an assessment of the health risks from substances commonly encountered in the workplace.
  • Explain the use and limitations of occupational exposure limits including the purpose of long-term and short-term exposure limits.
  • Outline control measures that should be used to reduce the risk of ill health from exposure to hazardous substances.
  • Outline the hazards, risks and controls associated with specific agents.
  • Outline the basic requirements related to the safe handling and storage of waste.

Noise and Vibration Awareness
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Temporary Physical effects: Reduction in hearing (temporary threshold shift). Ringing in ears (temporary tinnitus).
  • Permanent Physical effects: Tinnitus. Noise-induced hearing loss (permanent threshold shift). Inability to hear vehicles, warnings, conversations.
  • Psychological effects: Stress. Concentration problems.

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) Awareness
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Vibration white finger (blanching) and nerve damage, muscle weakening and joint damage.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Whole-body vibration effects: Damage to spinal discs.
  • Vertigo.

Stress Awareness
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • The prevalence of Mental Ill Health Within the Workplace
  • Common types of Mental Ill Health
  • Causes of Work-Related Ill Health
  • Control Measures.

Understanding the Health and Safety nature of using Work Equipment
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Outline general requirements for work equipment.
  • Explain the hazards and controls for hand-held tools.
  • Describe the main mechanical and non-mechanical hazards of machinery.
  • Explain the main control measures for reducing risk from machinery hazards.

Understanding Fire risks and hazards in the workplace
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Describe the principles of fire initiation, classification and spread.
  • Outline the principles of fire risk assessment.
  • Describe the basic principles of fire prevention and the prevention of fire spread in buildings.
  • Outline the appropriate fire alarm system and fire-fighting arrangements for a simple workplace.
  • Outline the factors which should be considered when implementing a successful evacuation of a workplace in the event of a fire.

Hazards and Risks of Electricity in the workplace
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Outline the principles, hazards and risks associated with the use of electricity in the workplace.
  • Outline the control measures that should be taken when working with electrical systems or using electrical equipment in all workplace conditions.

Risk Assessment in the workplace
This short course aims to offer an awareness of:

  • Definition of Hazard and Risk.
  • Who may be harmed and how.
  • Evaluating Risk.
  • Recording Significant Findings.
  • Reviews.
