NC Introduction to Horticulture

Course Content

This course is suitable for students who want to learn more about parks, gardens and landscapes, including working with plants. The course will be valuable for students who want work with gardens, fruit, vegetables and bulbs. It’s a practical course which also has some basic academic units which help students deepen their knowledge. 

The Essential Skills units help students with numbers and language and other core skills needed for the modern worker.

Areas of study include:

·        Horticultural Machinery

·        Landscaping Preparation and Aftercare

·        Fruit and Vegetable Production

·        Garden design

·        Plant identification

Dates: August 2022 to June 2023

Commitment: 16 hours with a lecturer per week.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course but good reading, writing and numeracy skills are essential. Applicants will be invited to an interview where they must demonstrate a real passion for plants and the environment and have a desire to develop and create landscape features. Individuals with relevant experience, but few academic qualifications, are welcome to apply.

Method of Assessment

While the course is mainly practical there is a theoretical element that is continuously assessed throughout the year. There is no end of year assessment.

Future Prospects

Students can progress onto the Level 5 Landscape course, Pre-apprentice or Modern Apprentice training or garden centres, local authorities, horticulture businesses and estates.
