Topics covered include: calculus, vectors, trigonometry, polynomials, circles, logarithms & exponentials. Three internal units with an external exam in May. The course can be delivered during the evening or by Distance Learning. The course will be split into 2 parts - Preparation for Higher Mathematics (Aug-Jan) and Higher Mathematics (Jan-May) - learners must progress and achieve on the Preparation course to be allowed entry to part 2. Higher Mathematics is often described as the 'gold standard' of Scotland's SQA exam system, with more than 20,500 pupils sitting the paper in 2018.
Standard Grade Mathematics at Grade 1, or Intermediate 2 Mathematics (C100 11) at Grade A, or National 5 Mathematics (C747 75) at Grade A, or Higher Mathematics (C100 12) at Grade D or above. These qualifications must have been achieved at the first time of sitting. Entry to the course may also be subject to successful completion of a diagnostic test and one-to-one interview.
Method of Assessment
Internal assessment & external exam (at college or SQA approved centre). Learners must achieve a satisfactory mark in the prelim exam to sit final exam.
A pass in Higher Mathematics can open up many opportunities for learners; it is often an essential pre-requisite for entry to university in many areas.
