HNC Social Sciences

Course Content

This highly academic course includes: Research and Methodology, Sociology, Psychology, Investigation, Press & Broadcasting, History, Criminology (and Geography, Counselling & Politics at Gardyne Campus). Guidance and support with study/exam skills and UCAS applications provided. Progression can include 1st or 2nd year entry into a wide variety of degree courses across Scotland. There may also be the opportunity to progress to HND Social Sciences.

HNC Social Sciences can be studied part-time over 2 years through evening study. (Please see PDA Psychology, Sociology, Politics and History for more information.)

Entry Requirements

Two relevant Highers, or one relevant Higher and NPA Level 6 or PDA. Advanced Certificate/Level 6 group award with all course credits successfully achieved, or equivalent will also be considered. Further selection is also based on a strong personal statement. For progressing students - attendance record/previous performance and staff reference are considered. Relevant Highers include, but are not limited to, English, History, Maths, Modern Studies, Politics, Geography, RMPS, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Classical Studies, Media Studies.

Method of Assessment

This course contains a high academic workload. Assessments include: open and closed book, blogs, academic posters and presentations. A graded unit closed book exam may be used (following existing guidelines).

Future Prospects

Successful completion can allow progression to HND Social Sciences (with 15 credits).


This HNC also allows 2nd year progression into various undergraduate programmes at universities including, but not limited to, Abertay, RGU, Aberdeen, UHI, Stirling, St Andrews and the Open University.


For those not wishing to further their studies, HNC Social Sciences allows progression to a wide range of careers, employment opportunities and volunteering.
