HNC Social Sciences

Course Content

Highly academic course. Includes: Research and Methodology, Sociology, Psychology, Investigation, Social Anthropology, History, Criminology (and Geography, Counselling & Politics at Gardyne Campus). Guidance and support with study/exam skills and UCAS applications provided. This 15 credit HNC allows 2nd year articulation into various undergraduate degrees including at Abertay, RGU, Aberdeen, UHI, Stirling, St Andrews and the Open University. Social Science allows progression to an extensive range of 1st or 2nd year undergraduate degrees and a wide range of careers. Progression to HND level study will depend on successful completion of all 15 credits, performance, attendance and reference.

HNC Social Sciences could also be studied part-time over 2 years through evening study. Please see PDA Psychology, Sociology, Politics and History for more information.

Entry Requirements

Two relevant Highers; or one relevant Higher and NPA Level 6 or PDA; or a relevant Advanced Certificate/Level 6 group award with all course credits successfully achieved, or equivalent. Further selection on the basis of a strong personal statement. For current/prior learners attendance record/previous performance and staff reference is considered. Relevant Highers include, but are not limited to, English, History, Maths, Modern Studies, Politics, Geography, RMPS, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Classical Studies, Media Studies.

Method of Assessment

High academic workload. Open and closed book assessments, blogs, academic posters, presentations. Graded Unit closed book exam following existing guidelines.

Future Prospects

Allows progression to HND Social Sciences (with 15 credits and a B grade), 1st or 2nd year entry for many related courses including Social Sciences, Criminology, Sociology, History, Politics, Social Anthropology, Psychology, Philosophy & Geography.
