National 5 Mathematics (2019/20)

Course Content

Covers many different areas including algebraic operations, indices, surds, trigonometry, quadratics and functions. Comprising three units with an external exam in May.

The course can be delivered during the day or evening at either Gardyne or Arbroath campus or by Distance Learning

Our Distance Learning course will be split into 2 parts - Preparation for National 5 Maths (Aug-Jan) and National 5 Maths (Jan-May) - learners must progress and achieve on the Preparation course to be allowed entry to part 2.

Target Audience

Anyone who wants to improve their mathematical ability and/or achieve a minimum level of mathematics required for many different career paths including areas such as teaching, engineering and social work.

National 5 Maths is a challenging course, and should only be undertaken by applicants who are already secure in their understanding of elementary aspects of algebra and trigonometry.

Entry Requirements

Standard Grade Maths at 3 or Intermediate 1 Maths (C10010) at Grade A or Intermediate 2 Maths (C10011)/National 5 (C74775) at Grade D or above or National 4 Maths (C74774). Entry to the course may also be subject to successful completion of a test.

Future Prospects

Required for all primary and secondary teaching courses, many Engineering courses and some Social Work courses. Also sought after by both employers and Higher Education institutions.


Internal assessment and external examination. All learners must achieve a satisfactory mark in the prelim exam in order to be presented for the final exam.
