Higher Maths (2019/20)

Course Content

The new Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) Higher. Topics covered include: calculus, vectors, trigonometry, polynomials, circles, logs & exponentials. Three internal units with an external exam in May.

The course can be delivered during the evening or by Distance Learning.

Our Distance Learning course will be split into 2 parts - Preparation for Higher Maths (Aug-Jan) and Higher Maths (Jan-May) - learners must progress and achieve on the Preparation course to be allowed entry to part 2.

Target Audience

Higher Maths is a fast paced and very challenging course, and should only be undertaken by applicants who already have very good knowledge and understanding of mathematics at National 5 (or equivalent) level.

Entry Requirements

Standard Grade Maths at Grade 1, or Intermediate 2 Maths (C100 11) at Grade A, or National 5 Maths (C747 75) at Grade A, or Higher Maths (C100 12) at Grade D or above. These qualifications must have been achieved at the first time of sitting. Applicants may also be asked to complete a test.

Future Prospects

Higher Maths is often described as the 'gold standard' of Scotland's SQA exam system, with more than 20,500 pupils sitting the paper last year. A pass in Higher Maths can open up many opportunities for you. Higher Maths is often an essential prerequisite for entry to university in the areas of Science, Engineering, Technology, Computing, Architecture, Finance and many more.


Internal assessment and external examination. All learners must achieve a satisfactory mark in the prelim exam in order to be presented for the final exam.
