Introduction to Life Sciences (2017/18)

Course Content

Designed to provide a short introduction to the underlying principles of Science for those who do not have any previous Science qualifications but wish to pursue further study in this area. Comprises two individual units covering the basics concepts of Biology, Chemistry and Maths for Science. This will provide an introduction into cell structure, cellular processes, functions of organelles, structure of the atom and basic chemical calculations. The course also covers practical techniques for Biology and Chemistry.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but students must show an enthusiasm for Science and a desire to progress to studying Science at a higher level.

Future Prospects

Good attendance and successful completion of this course may allow progression into a number of different courses such as Certificate in Applied Sciences programme, Higher Chemistry or Higher Human Biology evening classes.


This course will be assessed through a closed book assessment at the end of the course and the completion of a number of practical techniques.
