English Language (ESOL) - 16 week course

Course Content

This 16 week course is ideal for you if you are planning to visit Scotland on a 6 month Standard Visitor Visa. It will help you improve your English language skills for international communication or in order to prepare for living, working and studying in the UK. The course develops reading, writing, listening and speaking skills, grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary.  There is a strong focus on interactive communication and the course also includes project work with a special focus on Scotland, guided self-study, one-to-one support from a dedicated group tutor and cultural visits and events.  Levels: Elementary – Advanced. 


There may be some online learning depending on your level and on Covid19 restrictions.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but we do not take beginners. Elementary is the lowest level and applicants must have basic literacy skills in English. Applicants will be asked to do a written task and return by email.  They may be asked to attend an online interview. They will then attend an information/testing session before the start of the course. Minimum age: normally 18, but students over 16 may be accepted if they are staying with family or a legal guardian.

Method of Assessment

Regular progress tests with all learners progressing towards Scottish Qualifications in ESOL . Learners may also undertake preparation for Cambridge English Qualifications depending on level.

Future Prospects

On successful completion and dependent on the level achieved, learners can progress towards university and benefit from enhanced work prospects in their own countries. Depending on visa status, learners can apply for further English courses in our department, other courses at college or university and benefit from improved English language knowledge and skills.
