Certificate in Early Education and Childcare at SCQF Level 5

Course Content

This course will enable learners to study a range of subjects such as Play in Early Learning and Childcare, Care and Feeding of Children and Young People, Development and Wellbeing of Children and Young People, Introduction to First Aid, Child Protection and Supporting Children with Additional Support Needs. Essential skills in numeracy, communication and ICT are also included. Learners are encouraged to participate in volunteering activities to relate theory to practice and develop their caring skills.

Entry Requirements

Three National 4s in academic subjects (or equivalent) or successful completion of a relevant National 4 Certificate course. Adult returners without formal qualifications but have work or volunteering experience are also welcome. Selection is based on: personal statement, qualifications and/or experience, one satisfactory reference and performance at a group information session. 

Method of Assessment

Assessments include practical demonstrations, project work, presentations, report writing and short answer questions.

Future Prospects

May lead onto NC in Early Education & Childcare or PDA Education Support Assistance. Learners may wish to seek employment as a childcare assistant, playgroup assistant, nursery assistant or after-school club assistant.
