Cambridge Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)

Course Content

*Update June 2020* *Please note*: Due to Covid-19, we will be offering a 20-week Blended Online course (all methodology done online by working through self-study units, completing forum tasks with tutor support and tutorials and all Teaching Practice done at the college face-to-face). Teaching Practice will take place in the second part of the course.

The CELTA course is a practical, classroom-based course giving a good foundation in basic teaching techniques: classroom management, lesson planning, error correction, language analysis and using resources, to name but a few. Input sessions, which are led by the trainers, focus on teaching methodology and language awareness. This input is put to practical use in the preparation of lesson plans and 6 hours of assessed teaching practice. There is a minimum of 120 contact hours plus 120 additional learning hours of independent background reading, assignment writing and lesson preparation. Learners will be given the opportunity to gain valuable skills by working as volunteers in our ESOL classes.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should be at least 20 years old and hold four SQA Highers (C grade or above) or equivalent. If English is not an applicant's first language, a very high level of spoken and written accuracy is required (minimum CPE or a recent IELTS score of 7.0 overall, including 7.0 for written English). Applicants are required to submit a pre-interview task and, if successful, will be invited to attend a group interview.

Method of Assessment

Six hours of assessed teaching practice and four written assignments (of 3000 words in total), which are internally assessed and externally moderated.

Future Prospects

This course is the basic requirement for those embarking on a career in English Language Teaching. Internationally recognised, this qualification can lead to stimulating and challenging work all over the world or in the UK.
