Spotlight on – Katie Bain

I am the Development Officer for the College’s newly established Service Design Academy.  Service Design is an approach to working that is human centred, allowing services to be designed so that they really work and meet the needs of those who use them.

Big global businesses such as Apple and Air BnB have already adopted a service design approach, while at the other end of the scale it is being used to provide sustainable solutions to Egypt's housing crisis. What’s exciting from my point of view is that once approved by SQA, we will be the only College to offer accredited training in Service Design in the UK.

 Best thing about your job?

I genuinely enjoy my job.   I enjoy facilitating workshops, connecting with lots of different people and departments and supporting creative and innovative sessions where people get the chance to have their say.   I have seen the improvements, benefits and changes that can be made using service design. By listening to the staff and students, we have a really amazing opportunity to make some great improvements together.

If you could do any other job for a day what would it be and why?

I think it would have to be something in the music industry, like a music festival organiser!  A mixture of my two favourite things – music and organising a good party and get together with friends!

Your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement so far would probably be completely changing career pathways after completing a Law Degree.    I got a full time job at the University and worked my way through a three year part-time Masters course in Leadership and Innovation.   This opened up avenues that I had never even considered previously and that led me to gaining a lot of service design experience and discovering a whole creative community in Dundee.

As soon as I started studying service design, I knew that I wanted to work in this field but being able to do that whilst creating a ‘first of its kind’ course AND being able to continue my professional development gaining skills as a lecturer and experience facilitating workshop, is an added bonus.

Where is your favourite place to be?

Longboat Key, Florida.   It is located just close enough to Orlando to visit all the theme, water parks and shopping malls to have the fun-filled experience but far enough away from all the madness, that it is relaxing and feels like paradise when you are sunbathing on the beach.
