The DnA Tech story began with a group of certificate in business management students who, with help and encouragement from the computing department, took hard drives from obsolete computers and converted them into external drives which they could sell at discount prices.

As well as doing market research and formulating a business plan, learning new skills marketing their product, the students also set up a Facebook page and then launched a website www.dna-tech.co.uk

The social enterprise project has been so successful it recently gained an award from the Scottish Enterprise Academy. Two of the DnA Tech students, Sergej Diomin and Charles Hunter, attended the awards ceremony at the Hub in Edinburgh to display and discuss their initiative.

The idea of recycling hard drives to provide resources for the college went down well and the fact that parts of the hard drive could be recycled by Ucan (a student run business) was equally well received.

The vision for this academic year is that the new HNC Business students will work with the Certificate in Business students, sharing their current idea and deciding what new ideas the business can do.

D&A College also hopes to foster links with secondary schools in Tayside and Angus and share with them the social enterprise idea.
