Engineering a career
7 September 2016
A huge congratulations to one of our alumni, Tom Taylor, who has been awarded the first ever scholarship by renowned engineering firm, Sir Robert McAlpine.
Tom first came to Dundee and Angus College after failing to get the results he wanted at school. Beginning with our National Progression Award and then our Pathway to Construction Course, he went on to complete his NC and HND in Civil Engineering with flying colours.
As course leader, John Mitchell says, “Tom was always a ‘stand-out’ student. Committed, focussed and enthusiastic, there was never any question he was destined to succeed.”
Tom’s excellent results mean that he has now been accepted into the third year of Abertay University’s BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering.
The McAlpine Scholarship is open to any student entering year three of the BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering at Abertay. It is merit-based, aimed at students who can demonstrate excellent exam and coursework results, as well as determination to excel in their final two years at university.
Tom says, “When I found out about the scholarship with Sir Robert McAlpine I didn’t hesitate to get my application in straight away. I didn’t think for a second it would be me that was offered the opportunity, but remained hopeful that the hard work I had put in would all be worthwhile. I had already done a lot of research into multiple large contractors for my college work so I knew how successful Sir Robert McAlpine was and the projects they had done, and this made me all the more determined to push for this opportunity.”
