Entry requirements
Individuals must be in continuous employment in a Children and Young people setting for a minimum of 16 hours per week (paid or voluntary) with a minimum of 3 months' experience. They must have a sound understanding of current guidance and frameworks, legislation, policies and procedures applicable to the work setting.
Selection for the course will be by interview.
Course content
This is a work-based qualification and all evidence produced must be in relation to the individual's job role and responsibility.
The award is made up of 6 units, 4 of which are mandatory.
  • The mandatory units are as follows:
  • Support effective communication
  • Support the health and safety of yourself and individuals
  • Support the safeguarding of children
  • Develop your own knowledge and practice
In addition to the above, 2 further units must be chosen from a number of options.

Qualifications achieved
Each apprentice is required to achieve the following qualification: SVQ 3 Social Services Children & Young People GH5W 23
Core skills
Each apprentice is required to achieve the following core skills:
  • Communication SCQF Level 6
  • Working with Others SCQF Level 6
  • Problem Solving SCQF Level 6
  • Information and Communication Technology SCQF Level 5
  • Numeracy SCQF Level 5
The programmes should take 18 months to complete. Candidates will be work-based and are reviewed by an assessor every 10-13 weeks throughout the duration of the programme.  
Future prospects
This qualification is recognised by the Scottish Social Services Council for registration requirements.
