Modern Apprenticeship – Business and Administration
“It’s a great solution. I’m learning and earning, but, believe me, I still go out with my mates at the weekend and have a good time. That hasn’t changed!”
19-year-old Jack Hayes had already started a sociology course at university, when he spotted a business administration post based at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital.
“I was just about to sit my degree exams at the end of my first year, but I knew I wasn’t happy. I only had about eight hours of lectures and tutorials a week and I was racking up student debt with not much to show for it.”
Jack had applied for a few jobs, but what attracted him to the Modern Apprenticeship in Business and Administration at Dundee University’s Medical School, was the opportunity to earn and learn at the same time.
“This is a great opportunity for young people to learn on the job and come out with a recognised qualification at the end of it.” Jack is following a carefully crafted programme to achieve his SVQ in Business and Administration and is trained and monitored on a regular basis by a Dundee and Angus College assessor.
Undergraduate Manager, Dr David Russell says “Jack has been a great asset to the School of Medicine. He is learning key skills whilst obtaining a qualification that will support him finding employment in the future. Taking on a Modern Apprentice has been a positive experience. As well as supporting young people into employment we are gaining valuable lessons from Jack as he brings an enthusiastic appetite to learn to our department.”
As Jack says “If I had carried on with my degree I would have only built up more debt and I would have had to start at the beginning job hunting once I had graduated. This gives me the chance to enjoy myself, but make real progress with my career too.”
