This Modern Apprenticeship comprises three elements: an SVQ, an HNC in Applied Science and certification of Core Skills. The SVQs available allow candidates to tailor the award to their specific workplace requirements. The SVQ is based on National Standards and consists of 2 mandatory units:
Maintain Health and Safety Procedures in Life Sciences and Related Industries
Maintain Effective and Efficient Working Relationships in Life Sciences and Related Industries
A number of optional units complete the programme. This SVQ course is work based and all assessments will take place in a day to day working environment. Candidates will attend college on a day release basis to complete all units required for HN qualification and Core Skills. Each apprentice is required to achieve one of the following qualifications:
SVQ 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activates (Industrial Science) SCQF Level 7 GE4C 23 SQA
SVQ 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activates (Education Science) SCQF Level 7 GE4A 23 SQA
SVQ 3 in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activates (Clinical Science) SCQF Level 7
Plus one of the following must be achieved:
National Certificate in Applied Sciences SCQF Level 6 G90N 46
National Progression Award in Laboratory Science SCQF Level 6 G9G6 46
Higher National Certificate in Bioscience SCQF Level 7 G8WV 15
Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences SCQF Level 7 G7V9 15
Professional Development Award in Laboratory Science SCQF Level 7 G9F0 47
Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences SCQF Level 7 GK6E 15. This qualification will replace the HNC in Applied Science G7V9 15 once it has lapsed. New Modern Apprentices can register on this qualification now.
Each apprentice is required to achieve the following core skills:
Communication SCQF Level 5
Working with Others SCQF Level 5
Problem Solving SCQF Level 5
Information and Communication Technology SCQF Level 5
Numeracy SCQF Level 5
The programme should take 3 years to complete. Candidates will be work-based and are reviewed by an assessor every 13 weeks throughout the duration of the programme. Candidates will attend College once a week on a day-release basis.
